What are Keywords and why are they important?

Keywords are typically 2 to 5 word phrases that you would expect a person to type into a search engine to find what they are looking for, e.g. "star wars action figures". Keywords are an important part of your internet marketing strategy because that is what your customers first start out with to find your web page content.

What is Keyword Targeting and how does it get me more website traffic?

Keyword Targeting is the process of finding which set of keywords are the most effective at bringing up your website's content on search engines. As a general rule of thumb, a shorter set of key words is very broad and very competitive, e.g. "toys" will bring up around 543,000,000 results on Google, many people target this keyword by default. But a longer, more specific set of keywords, e.g. "kid toys in San Diego", is less competitive and easier to optimize for. As another general rule: shorter key word searchers are "shoppers" and longer keyword searchers are "buyers" - so we try and drive as many "buyers" to our clients' web pages as possible by optimizing for a specific set of key words.

Why are links so important when it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

The number, quality and relevance of in-bound links that point to your web site are like votes in the eyes of the major search engines (Google, Yahoo!, MSN) for your web site that determine where your site ranks in search engine results. The more quality, relevant in-bound links (votes) your web site has the better. There are many technical exceptions that determine the quality, relevance and how much weight a search engine will give your links, but in-bound links are known to play a major factor in how well your web site ranks in search engine results.

What is "swarm" logic?

Swarm logic refers to the idea that intelligent behavior emerges from a group of collective "dumb" things that interact on a low level. For example, in an ant colony there isn't a single ant that controls the colony's action, not even the queen ant, but rather, ant behavior is controlled by swarm logic. If you put 10,000 or so dumb ants together, the colony as a whole becomes smart. They will calculate the shortest routes to food supplies by sniffing out pheromone signals from other ants and will adapt to the environment as a single entity.

Search engines are very similar to ants in that Google, for example, will send out all it's little web crawlers (ants) that retrieve and index information from around the web. As the information from each crawler is received, it is compared to the information of other web crawlers and website-keyword associations are created/built up over time - Google is beginning to act as a single entity, just the like the ant colony. Once the crawlers index and associate your website with certain keywords, people are then able to go to their favorite search engines and type in their desired keywords, resulting in search engine rankings. Best Rank's focus is to help steer the ants (web crawlers) so that they collectively index and associate your targeted keywords with your web site, so that people can find you, resulting in a maximized return on investment for your company.

What is "viral" marketing?

Viral marketing can be described as a set of techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce an increase in brand awareness. For example, a single cold virus inside your body doesn't have much effect on your health. But after a few days it can multiply into the millions, causing a sore throat or runny nose. Viral marketing, just like a physical virus, can be very useful in reaching a large number of people rapidly. When relevant, Best Rank uses viral marketing techniques to attract potential consumers to our clients' websites.

Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness, through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can often be word-of-mouth delivered and enhanced online; it can harness the network effect of the Internet and can be very useful in reaching a large number of people rapidly.
